Abstract

Facial rejuvenation using intradermal botulinum toxin is a common treatment in contemporary cosmetic medicine. Despite the fact that the benefit of the procedure seems questionable it has become integrated part of package holidays offered by medical tourism firms and major tourism industry. Risks may outweight benefits, especially when botulinum toxin is applicated abroad. We would not support any medical tourism without certified good medical practice (including pre-travel informed consent), clear rules for accountability (according to the law of the country of origin of the patient) and extended treatment (free of any charge) in case of post-surgery complications.

Die Touristik wirbt mit Faltenglättungen im Urlaub und hat damit offenbar Erfolg. Die Suchbegriffe "Faltenfrei" und "Urlaub" ergaben im Oktober 2011 bei Google 81.000 Einträge.

So könnten sich Urlauber, quasi im Angesicht der Sphinx, von ihren Falten befreien lassen. Das „Sphinx-Gesicht“ in der Medizin bisher ein Synonym für das myopathische Gesicht mit maskenartigem Ausdruck, halbgeöffnetem Mund, dicken Lippen, Unfähigkeit zum Stirnrunzeln und Augenschließen könnte daher bald zu einem stehenden Begriff für missglückte Botox-Applikationen während des Urlaubs werden.
